Protecting the shareholders is now, since Milton Friedman’s greed is good became law, the only legal obligation that applies to corporations. No longer do they have obligations to their customers, suppliers or the general public. Therefore anything that a corporation does that hurts its shareholders can be punished by the PTB, so the SEC can now go after EXXON because its decision to NOT acknowledge global warming caused by their actions will hurt its shareholders.
