Ways to Save on your Electric Rates

Texas has some of the lowest rates for electricity in the country, but even so, you want to do whatever you can to save even more money on your rates. Here are some ways you can save on your electric rates.
Eliminate vampires
Numerous electronic appliances suck small amounts of electricity just by being plugged into the wall, even when you aren’t using them. And even though these amounts are small — pennies a day in most cases, they add up over time. To save on your electricity rates, unplug things such as cell phone and tablet chargers, your cable box and small kitchen appliances such as your toaster when you aren’t using them.
Turn off the lights
One of the biggest ways most households waste electricity is by leaving lights on when they don’t need them. To save on your electric rates, be sure to turn off all lights that you don’t need. And to alleviate some of the need for light, open your curtains and blinds during the day and early evening to let in natural light.
Switch to CFLs
Compact fluorescent light bulbs are much more efficient than traditional light bulbs, so you will save a ton of money on your electric costs by installing them in your home. They do cost a lot more, so you do have to make a significant upfront investment, but the amount of energy they save coupled with the fact that they last a lot longer than traditional bulbs, means you will recoup the money you spent and much more over time.
Adjust your thermostat
If you have an electric furnace and/or an electric water heater, you can save on your electric costs by adjusting the thermostat. Turn it down on your water heater and your furnace in the winter. Turn it up on your A/C in the summer.
