Back before 9/11, few Americans had heard of the Taliban. They showed up in the news occasionally for the organized massacres of their fellow Afghans, for starving their fellow Afghans, for their brutal oppression of women, for their war on cultural expression (no radio, tv, art, photography, etc.), and their systematic destruction of religious iconography, including the demolition of two monumental Buddhist statues from the sixth century.
