That’s a great question and we continuously evaluated this question while building the library. We continuously tested with designers to see which way to go.

Using nested symbol actually reduces the number of symbols to maintain. Otherwise, a symbol for almost every variation of each component will need to be created. That number of symbols would become unmanageable.

The override menus also shows designers exactly what they can change. The nested override menus only show the relevant things that can be modified for that symbol. We also provide a sticker sheet showing the variations they can create with symbols.

There are many ways to build out the symbol library. When creating on, continuously test with designers to understand their thought process and how they expect it to work. The library is a product and designers are the end users.
