I’ve been thinking about all of the options lately and the idea of subscribing to each individual channel would be much more expensive than the traditional cable subscription. If I wanted Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, ESPN, UFC events, HBO, Showtime, the major networks and a handful of specialty channels I’d easily run over $100/month. The pattern seems to be moving this way. I was hoping that Apple would introduce another option into this foray with the Apple TV, but I’m not sure any one can pull together a good deal that makes sense for consumers AND providers. If things go a la cart et al than I will probably continue to just not see content from most of these providers and just watch what ever is available on what I feel like subscribing to. There are going to be a lot of casualties in these markets it seems, but I don’t think it’s going to be the entities themselves as much as it will be the ones working behind the scenes, trying to eek out deals. They’ve all built up empires built on an unrealistic growth plan that people have decided won’t be the way they continue viewing content. The slower they are to not only meet the people where they’re at, but become part of creating a new content reach for a new generation the worse chances they will have to survive.
