There is a concept known as ubiquitous computing, which is computing that is available everywhere. It is computing that is seamlessly woven into the very fabric of lives. However, even when we are surrounded by computing we will still need ways to interact with it. It will not all be voice controlled. We will still use screens. We may even continue to use keyboards and mice. With ubiquitous computing the form factor of the ‘thing’ that does your computing is largely unimportant EXCEPT when the form factor can be an aid to what you are trying to do, at which point the form factor is everything. With ubiquitous computing anything can be your computer but sometimes it really needs to conform to established norms to be truly beneficial. I therefore do not believe that there will ever be one device to rule them all. I do, however, believe that the heart of every computer will be the same but it will be skinned in whatever form factor we require.
