I taught abroad in South Africa in 2012. I got the same people-looking-out-for-each-other vibe while staying with my host family in Grahamstown. My host mom made the area sound less safe than I felt that it was, which I thought was upsetting, like why didn’t she like where she lived? But just as well, I loved being in South Africa. Someday I hope to go back for an extended period of time.
