Tipping is fundamentally flawed. First, it goes against the science of motivation (read “Drive”, by Daniel Pink). Second, it is wrong and stupid that waiters aren’t just paid properly, but instead to have their livelihood dependent upon the generosity of others. Waiters and waitresses should simply be paid a living wage, and yes, I am aware this will raise the cost of food (to the real cost, instead of a false-advertising scheme that doesn’t include the “required” but “optional” tip), and I beg for that. I would happily pay more for my meals, knowing that the people serving them have their livelihood needs met, then to deal with this broken system of false schemes and pretend “honor”. Want to bitch about tipping? Why don’t you bitch about it to your local politician so we can abolish the stupid system and instead pay people what their time and efforts are worth.

To contrast this, I wonder how well it would go over if we made it so that lawyers and doctors had a salary below minimum wage, and they had to rely on “tips” from patrons… I wonder how well that would go over…
