In the past 8 months, I’ve seen my life transform in a bigger way than any other point in my memory. And the funny part is, nothing “huge” has really changed like you’d expect when I say it’s been the biggest transformation of my life.
Let’s backtrack a bit here to put this in perspective.
Last June, I moved two hours from home to be in the city with my girlfriend. It was the first time I actually began living with someone who I was in a relationship with, so that could be considered by most to be a “big jump” in my life. However, that wasn’t really a huge or overly significant thing to me at the time. It seemed natural and was really a smooth transition from life in the small town to life in the city.
What’s really changed me for the better, though, is learning to live with and plan with someone. I mean, I paid all my bills prior to moving in with her. I’m used to paying bills and have been for four or five years. But learning to do this with the income of someone else has been amazing simply because we’ve learned to work together and not finger point about bills and the likes. While she handles rent, I handle most of our other bills.
One thing we’ve begun doing since moving in is budgeting. And while we don’t stick to a budget like we probably should, at least attempting to do it so far has helped us put more money towards savings and my student loans than we’d be able to without budgeting. Heck, I’m even looking at life insurance policies for myself to get it locked down now while I’m still young and healthy. Life insurance! I never really would’ve thought I would be considering this so early in my life, but it just makes sense for us.
And it’s not just the financial part of our lives that have changed for the better, either. I’ve literally learned to be a better person, more aware of the needs of someone else, and just kinder in general through the things she’s taught me. I feel a lot more prepared for the future to raise other animals, have kids, buy a house, and just be a better, more aware person in general. Whether it’s my girlfriend just being an amazing person overall that has taught me all of this or the fact that we’re learning together, I know I’ve grown more during these last 8 months than any other point in my life.
