I’m 70 y.o., and 25 or more years ago I started getting more politically involved. I went to the Seattle Labor Temple to hear one of the older Coburns talk about his looooong experience in the political trenches. He shared what he saw over an over — that liberals/lefties enjoy cutting each other off at the knees, more than anything else. And nothing has changed. Why is this?? Are we unusually blind (and susceptible) to planted provocateurs? Or do our higher ideals foster unconscious aspirations to sainthood, with increased sensitivity to ‘heresy’? Are we prey to the fundamentalist purity, ‘true believer’ syndrome that ends in a sad pile of impotent splinters?Being ‘right’, requiring you to be ‘wrong’, is a powerful ego boost, ‘superiority’ is a deadly drug. Interesting how the ‘opposition’, with their ‘grubby’-but-laser-focused (i.e., getting mine, screw you) has little problem seeing the long term advantage of compromise. ‘The perfect is often the enemy of the good’….. there is something tragically amiss in the world of ‘doing good’. What is it?????
