MeeGo — A great forgotten operating system

Overview

Symbian was the most popular mobile operating system more than a decade ago. However, everything has changed since Apple released the first iPhone in 2007. Although Nokia has made serious efforts to improve the performance of Symbian on touch devices, such as Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 and Nokia N8, their products were still far behind Apple’s iPhones. Having realized that Symbian was no longer a wise choice, Nokia tried to use MeeGo on their products before choosing Windows Phone in the future.

History

MeeGo was a successor of both Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo. According to the announcement at Mobile World Congress in 2010, Meego was developed not only for smartphones but also for mobile computers, notebooks, tablets, and more — an operating system for the IoT world. Developers can distribute their apps in the Ovi Store and Intel’s AppUpSM Center.

Then, Nokia revealed their first MeeGo smartphone — Nokia N9 in June 2011 and released it in September 2011. At that time, Nokia N9 was the first Nokia buttonless smartphone with a polycarbonate design used for their future Lumia products. Its software features were ahead of time.
