Rose, Bud, Thorn (a gratitude game)
Growing up, during family dinner each night we would go around the table and say our “Rose, Bud, and Thorn” of the day. And it is something I have continued to this day!
The game of “Rose, Bud, and Thorn”, can be used as a reflection tool for the self. Looking at areas of success, potential growth, and opportunities. It also helps to point out the small, more mundane things we forget to be thankful for with how overwhelming this life can be!
The “rose” is something positive that happened in your day. The “thorn” is a negative feeling or experience and the “bud” is something you are looking forward to.
This exercise helps me practice gratitude by simply taking a moment to think about my day, the feelings experienced and how I can be better going forward.
The act of physically saying something aloud has been shown to have many benefits. The more we speak the easier time we will have letting go, of a feeling, expectation, person, or experience. When we carry weights with us for too long, it takes a toll on both mental and physical health. Creating these states of depression and dissociation where we feel more like observers than participants in our own lives.
The next time you are out to dinner with friends or family try this exercise and feel yourself become more thankful 1 day at a time!
