It’s lonely being the only

I’m resurrecting a seven-year-old blog.

Back when presidential candidates were criss-crossing the country in 2007, Rudy Giuliani made a campaign stop in Minnesota.

“I’m the only Republican candidate that has the chance of winning the states that were previously Democratic states,” he said.

“That’s a ridiculous claim,” I thought. So I set up a Google News alert, bought a domain and fired up Movable Type.

Lonely Candidate is the result.

The blog tracks mentions of political candidates saying “I’m the only one who…” as they attempt to differentiate themselves from their competition.

Taken out of context, some are funny, some are disturbing and some are completely inscrutable.

Lonely Candidate received some nice attention when I launched it in 2007.

Wonkette said, “Just when you thought every possible variation of Election 2008 website has already been started and hated, here’s one that is actually kind of funny…”

Another site said “talk about yer niche blogging.”

It was even the Yahoo! Pick of the Day for October 5, 2007, back when the humans curated the search engines.

If you’re on Tumblr, I hope you’ll follow along. I shouldn’t have let this project fizzle out.
