Excellent topic, though the research still seems early-stage.
Unless I’m mistaken, Bommel’s studies were conducted in an artificial environment over a short period of time — with the obvious limitation that they only observed the immediate effect of the design cues.
While a red name (as in his study) or profile picture size (as you suggest) may temporarily increase the person’s public self-awareness, people get used to stuff pretty easily.
If people become desensitized to design cues and revert to feeling “unwatched,” then presumably the reversal of the bystander effect would end, correct?
