Great article, and a complicated issue…

You can’t blame anyone for designing in a way that helps (often underpaid) people get paid more while still leaving the decision entirely up to the user.

So long as the user can manually set an amount or decline to tip, I think this may be a good example of design consequences that are genuinely the individual's responsibility. In that case, articles like this are critical to making people aware of the issue so they can make informed decisions.
