This is one of greatest articles on company culture I’ve ever read. It felt as if you reached into my head and pulled out the things I’ve felt but could not articulate. Thank you.

You really summed it up nicely when you said that employers must treat their employees like the adult individuals that they are. In fact, I’d say the reason this strategy works is because it aligns with the deepest revelation of the enlightment in the western world, that is the sovereign individual as the highest and most important aspect of society. As the most fundamental aspect of society, each indivdual must have the freedom to operate as they see fit. This is why each person is endowned with inalienable rights to indivudal freedom.

Ultimately, when reality is laid bare it’s clear that life is suffering. However, the human spirit has unlimited potential to transcend the suffering and create beauty in the world. A great company focuses their efforts on strengthening individual aspects of employees, not improving the group as a whole. If the collective is given sovereignty above the individual, employees feel like just another cog in a machine. If each individual is strengthened then the collective becomes stronger.

Mediocre companies do not treat employees like the — adult — sovereign individuals that they are. They contribute to life’s suffering, rather than be a force that transcends it.
