fritter river

look at us
rush hour traffic
our daily wait
our daily fritter
our daily tax

to a bird we look
like a river of boulders
to God, a river of shame

what are all you people doing?
there
can’t be this much work to do!

I release the brake
I depress the brake
release the brake
tap the gas
depress the brake
like everyone else
on this asphalt river —
futuristic galley slaves
row row rowing our boats
to the promised land
