Mangoes

mangoes drop from trees
with a thud
down here
and we
are thrilled by this

mangoes for us
back home
they’re like 9 dollars each
and so
it’s a pretty cool thing
to pick them free
up off the grass

all that falls from trees
back home
are pine cones
crab apples
dead sticks
Peeping Toms
and Cottonwood seeds

the folks here
though
don’t think much of it
apparently —
they step right over them

familiarity fosters
depreciation
I guess

but it’s new for us
and I
bend down
grab one from the ground
hold it up to Barbara
like a mighty gem
and our eyes go wide
and we grin
