It was my birthday, freshman year. I stood in a study room in West Quad (my freshman year dorm) alone by myself on a Friday afternoon. I should’ve been ecstatic. I had somehow managed to finagle no Friday classes as a second semester freshman. And besides, it was my first birthday of college, 19-years-old and should’ve been an incredible day.

Instead, I found myself in the study room, alone, stressed and sad. I then did, what I thought at the time was unthinkable and maybe even a little scary. I grabbed my phone and dialed the number. Not because I felt like I was going to actually “do it” I just felt like I needed someone to talk to, you know. Sometimes, you just need that. I’m from a small town in Georgia. I was starting my first year in surgical technology program in college when my life changed drastically. During the summer of 2018, I was diagnosed with depression, and decided to take time off in school to focus on my health. I was having meltdowns, thinking of suicide, and hurting myself.

During this time, I was afraid of anyone knowing. I even went to therapy session alone without my mother knowing. I kept this a secret because of how judgmental my family is, but eventually I had to tell my mother, and my mother told my family without my permission at a family cookout.
