COACHING — WHAT COLOR SHOULD I PAINT MY LIFE?

Many of us have heard about coaching through our places of employment. Usually organizations use it as a method to assist its employees change behaviors or to support their rise in rank. In most cases it is not something the employees requests, it is a requirement imposed upon them.

But to get a real sense of what coaching is about; picture it as a process of picking a paint color to paint your walls.

You know you want to paint your old tired walls the perfect color, but there are so many great colors to choose from. Your friends and family all have opinions on what color best suits you. You even worry about what your co-workers or boss would say if they visited and saw certain colors on your wall — would it prevent you from getting ahead or would it propel your career?

You also are a little afraid to step out and try really bold and vibrant colors because you have always chosen earth tones. You take home a handful of color charts and start laying them close to furniture, carpets and pictures on the wall.

Everything looks great, even the bold, bright colors, but what colors reflect who you are or who you want to be? What colors will you be willing to live with for years or are these colors the stepping stone to other colors? Or will you choose a new color and throw out all of your old furniture, carpet and pictures and buy new ones to match your new color theme? In the end the color choice is yours, picked with a little guidance from someone who is interested in helping you know yourself and what colors paint your world.

Real coaching is a process that starts with the understanding that a person is naturally creative, resourceful and whole. Coaching does not view people as something to be fixed. Let’s look at coaching outside the work environment and its true benefits.

Ø WHY USE COACHING?

o Because done right, it will help you reach your goals

o It can help you tame those beasts called Fear, Failure and Unknown

o It can give you the right weapons to defeat those barriers or obstacles that hold you back


Ø DOES COACHING MEAN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOU?

o Just the opposite, coaching knows you have the capacities to do what you set out to do, but you need a hand to realize and develop those capabilities


Ø IS COACHING A LONG DRAWN OUT PROCESS?

o It lasts as long as you need it.


Ø IS COACHING ONE OF THOSE TOUCHY FEELY THINGS?

o No touching is involved, but you might feel a sense of accomplishment
