Back in 1990, I was fresh out of college, not even 21 yet, and just starting my music business career as a personal assistant to Susanna Hoffs after the Bangles broke up. One night, we went to see a virtually unknown Shawn Colvin at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. After the show, we went upstairs to say hello — Susanna was a huge fan (as was I). We walked into the dressing room to find Shawn sitting with Joni Mitchell, David Baerwald, and Larry Klein. Susanna and I took seats on the floor flanking Shawn while Baerwald and Klein geeked out on guitars on the other side of the room. We sat at Joni’s feet as she told stories and sang songs to us. It was an unforgettable evening.
