For me it was finding the right format (after I lost a bunch of initial weight at home on an elliptical — I felt too big and self conscious for the gym at the time). In those first few years I tried everything from spin to weights to heated vinyasa, giving each format a good few focused months or more with less focus on whatever other formats (for cross training purposes). Turned out my true love was for cardio dance. I now mix that up with weights, 8–10 sessions per week. Ended up loving a certain type of cardio dance (and that oh-so-important community) so much I became an instructor in one of the formats. But without trying and without the “trial periods” and searching I’m not sure a real love (beyond appreciation) for exercise would have been found.
