Do Startups Have a Drinking Problem?
Sarah Jane Coffey

I go through bouts of sobriety for mental health purposes, and the hardest place for me to avoid alcohol is my office — a start up.

Even though it’s fun, it’s often problematic and I find myself getting frustrated with my colleagues and management because of alcohol. Like when I was on a tight deadline and they started a party in the office at 3pm (not on a Friday). I love to kick back and relax as much as the next person, but I also like getting my work done on time and not adding more stress to my already stressed-out life. What’s more frustrating is that I was denied software that I need to do my job (and isn’t that expensive) because I was told their wasn’t enough in the budget, however we had an after party with THREE BARS set up AFTER we already had an incredibly elaborate party! We deserved a celebration but I also deserve the tools I need to do my job.

I’m in the process of hiring a new employee and I’m always forthcoming with our booze-friendly culture, I would had for someone here to bet put in such an uncomfortable (and unnecessary) position like you’ve experienced.
