Social Security Is Not Bankrupting America

“Social Security is bankrupting this country, we have a 17 trillion dollar deficit.”

False! While we do have a deficit of that magnitude, the Social Security Trust Fund has enough money to pay out every single benefit to every eligible member for the next 19 years. That will continue to be true as funds continue to be taken out of our paychecks.

That’s a fair deal made by a responsible organization, in my opinion. I hold no resentment in waving goodbye to that money when it so clearly helps the most vulnerable people in our nation. Naturally, many powerful millionaires and billionaires that lack perspective on being vulnerable disagree. And with their wealth they are able to create fear and discord, rather than use it to help the poor and the needy. Granted, not all wealthy people are like that, but the ones who are, are able to push their agenda with relative ease when people don’t know the facts.

The fact of the matter is that this country has a history of civil rights and liberties advancement in its short history unparalleled by any other country in the history of the world!!! DOES THAT NOT MEAN ANYTHING TO US, THE PEOPLE? I HAPPEN TO BE PRETTY PROUD OF THAT! People only get things by struggling for them, and there’s still plenty of struggle left…..

“In addition, an examination of the long-term constraints facing the trust funds and the federal budget clarifies that under the Social Security system’s self-financing framework, an improvement in trust fund finances will not relieve the accumulated debt commitments of the rest of the federal government.”
-From the Social Security Administration

Republicans are running on the sentiment that social security is bankrupting our country when financial analysis points to the opposite: suggesting that social security is in fact one of the most successful government programs of all time. I’ll hear any side of an argument, as long as it is based on fact.

Take that, combine it with the need to weave religion of any kind into political rhetoric, what in my view is an uncomfortable crusade to control women’s bodies, and the GOP has lost a lifelong Independent supporter of their party. It is not easy to hold the agenda of the party of Lincoln (great cars) in so much contempt, but congrats guys — you did it!
