Very true. An interesting observation I made during my five year experience involved the rate at which attrition occurs.

I think there is a subtle but precarious dynamic in today’s corporations where the vast number of corporate citizens at lower mid and junior levels are actually well intentioned and principled people.

Unfortunately, if there are a few bad apples in the upper mid and senior levels of a company two things tend to happen. a) junior employees “learn” bad habits from the senior employees as they move up or b) junior employees quit the firm once they realize just how bad senior management is.

Either way, you have a self-selection process which perpetuates poor values at the senior most levels of a firm. It quite literally rots from the top down.

The other tragic aspect of this dynamic is that good people essentially waste many good years of their young work lives either picking up bad habits or being overlooked as “expendable human capital.”

Much too often, these junior workers don’t realize the overarching perception that their most senior managers have of them until it’s too late.

So yes, agree, organizations do deserve the talent they keep. However, unfortunately, they often chew up and spit out a lot of good talent along the way.
