3 Steps to Diversify your Happiness, Fulfillment, or Satisfaction.

Are you craving feelings of fulfillment? Happiness? Satisfaction?

I’m not knocking those as goals — I think we should all want those things.

But if you’re craving them — are you relying on ONE THING to make you… fulfilled, happy, or satisfied?

I’ll go first and put up my hand.

I’m guilty of doing this.

I’m a human too.

I’ve relied on my work to make me feel fulfilled. And when things haven’t gone as planned, I become an emotional-blob of a human (it’s messy — like just so much snot. It just pours out of my nose.). And when that emotional-blob of a human shows up she destroys everything in her path.

I’ve also relied on my partner to make me happy. And, you guessed it! Emotional-blob human shows up when I’m not happy. It took many frank conversations and investment in coaching before I learned the lesson that I’m responsible for my own happiness (and to actually believe it).

So I’m going to ask you again, in the form of a cliché: are you putting all your eggs in one basket?

And without the cliché: are you making one person or one job responsible for all your happiness, satisfaction, or fulfillment?

Because that’s not healthy and it’s not productive.

It’s too much pressure for someone or something to be THE ONE THING that is going to give you everything that you need.

AND!!!! — we’re wasting time as emotional-blob humans when we could be feeling happy, fulfilled, satisfied, etc etc etc.

So what can you do?

  1. Know what the sensation of your desired feeling feels like in your body. What does it feel like to feel satisfied, happy, or fulfilled?
  2. Be present for those feelings throughout your day. Does checking off items on a to-do list feel satisfying? Does going for a walk at lunch make you happy? Does seeing someone smile because you complimented them make you feel fulfilled.
  3. Capture those moments when you discover them. Write them down or say them out loud. (we’re looking for quantity, not quality here — don’t get too hung up on “the perfect” feeling)

From there you can build a list of where you can derive the feelings that you’re craving aside from the ONE THING that you’re asking so much of right now.

That list then becomes your toolkit when you want to feel happy, fulfilled, satisfied, or something else.

I know this sounds simple, but honestly, it works.
