“I think, therefore I am” — Rene Descartes
Indeed, human beings, as the anthropological assertion goes, are social animals. We are beings of logic and reasoning. In the 21st century however, an exceeding number of humans are being pushed towards being robotic of sorts. You see, the problem lies with the social fabric of the new age era. We are beginning to be what is expected of us.
This is how my perception of the current scenario materializes- in the 19th and 20th century the human race saw an exponential growth. There were multitudes of booms. We had the industrial revolution, the green revolution and of course the population boom. In these two centuries, we saw so much of development that in the past few decades we have slackened in our approach towards research and development. An exceeding number of us are going on to be parts of the corporate world with the basic aim of doing and not creating. More and more professionals are doing what they are told to every day and therefore not essentially creating or discovering something new. Innovation among people has fallen terribly.
James Watson wasn't the only scientist of his time who advocated the fact that solitude and leisure culminate in a peaceful mind that is capable of discoveries and invention. If we flip through the pages of history, we would find likes of Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da’ Vinci and even Sir Isaac Newton, all of whom are great men and men who lived mostly in solitude. They lived in solitude which ultimately led to several theories and various benchmarks for art that were revolutionary.
They created history, and they did it their way.
The biggest project of my co-curricular life was my school’s annual magazine. I worked on The Academician as a Managing Editor which was a humbling and learning experience unlike any I’ve felt before. It was exhilarating. All through the years that I've worked on artistic and creative projects, I’ve realised that I’m able to deliver my best creations only when I work alone and in my own way, that I’ve formed resolutely. I do my job well when my colleagues are of a perceptive and patient nature.
When authorities impose restrictions on artists and researchers, creativity and innovation falls. It is a proven fact that has been observed over centuries of mankind. We are like free birds in the sky. We sing beautifully when we fly. Put us in a cage and you won't hear from us, ever again.
