Controversy Surrounds Taylor Swift’s Singapore Concert as Government Grants Spark Outcry
Taylor Swift’s Eras tour has taken her to Japan and Australia, among other destinations. However, the Singapore portion of the tour has sparked controversy, exposing a complex network of government funds, exclusivity clauses, and regional conflicts.
The controversy revolves around the discovery that the Singapore government offered a grant to concert organizer AEG in order to acquire exclusive rights to Swift’s shows throughout Southeast Asia. Initial reports indicated a startling sum of S$24 million for the six performances, but Culture Minister Edwin Tong later discounted the figure without confirming the exact amount. Despite the secrecy, Tong justified the decision, citing the expected economic advantages that would purportedly outweigh the grant’s amount.
The controversy stirred regional tensions, particularly in neighboring countries like Thailand and the Philippines, both home to large and fervent Swift fan bases.
Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin accused Singapore of paying an estimated US$2–3 million per night to prevent Swift from performing elsewhere in the region. Thavisin claimed he had attempted negotiations with AEG to bring Swift to Bangkok, only to face rejection. The exclusive deal left Thai Swifties disappointed, and the Prime Minister denounced Singapore’s actions, characterizing them as an impediment to regional cooperation.
In the Philippines, the exclusivity agreement drew the ire of lawmaker Salceda, who questioned the fairness of Singapore’s deal and called for a formal protest against the grant. Salceda argued that the arrangement contradicted the spirit of good neighborliness, particularly at the expense of Filipino fans who were now required to travel to Singapore to witness their idol’s live performance.
