Checking a Box and Writing Things Down
I’m a student of The Firehose Project — and it is excellent. The coursework is engaging; the team is hands on and communicative. Never before have I participated in structured classes that don’t result in a letter grade. It changes the motivations.
For everything except this one assignment.
This one, I’m doing because there has been an unchecked box and an almost-but-not-quite finished track taunting me from my home page for going on seven-ish weeks. I dislike practicing this type of writing — but Track 2 cannot remain unfinished. So let me tell you about some writing that I do enjoy.
I look forward to working with code, to solving problems within it. I take COPIOUS notes in Notepad and hashed out in Sublime. The act of writing out what I’m doing in my own words helps concepts stick, even if I never end up referring back to them. I remember errors I made and how to fix them. Or I know where to find my methodology if I can’t pull it right from my brain.
It is what I do instead of talking to a duck (or a Starbuck figure). My stream of consciousness theorizing and cursing out gem conflicts are not the kind of study notes that would help anyone else. For me, they are an excellent tool.
Thus do I join the multitudes in endorsing notating as a strategy for learning anything — but this in particular.
