What does the Future of Energy entail?

The 18th century Industrial Revolution was powered by fossil fuels: coal, oil, and natural gas. These energy sources continue to play a dominant role in our lives and our economies, with fossil fuels currently supplying 80% of the world’s energy needs. Energy production has been the main source of greenhouse gas emissions: according to the EPA, 90% of total U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions in 2019 were related to the burning of fossil fuels for energy. There’s a broad scientific consensus that reducing fossil fuel usage will bring significant benefits to our society: from benefiting the planet’s ecology to reducing the impact of climate change. However, society requires a substitute for fossil fuels in order to continue to consume energy.
