I’m not sure whether I should find Twitter’s attempt at reaching out to those with mental health issues cynical or just misguided. Twitter has this bad habit (like many other businesses) of not listening to its target community and as a result continues to alienate it. They have this weird, detached model of community outreach common in modern business models of “I’m doing what I feel is best for you,” rather than investing time and effort in examining the problem from the selected user base’s perspective.
Now, they’ve wasted time developing an intricate, intrusive nanny-ish solution which will only exacerbate the problem and drive users away from the platform rather than providing sufferers with an environment where they can freely talk about personal mental health issues without fear of being interrogated every time a term or phrase is used. I’m sure having a robot or an equally dead-inside admin who has no personal connection with the user check up on them to make sure they haven’t swallowed an entire bottle of prescription anti-psychotics all at once won’t serve to make users with mental disorders or suicidal thoughts feel even more stigmatized, isolated, and ostracized than they already do in their normal lives.
