The Belmont Goats Seek Neighborhood Offers To Be The Herd’s Next Home
Project’s Current Permit In Lents Expires In June 2017
Portland OR (December 1, 2016) — After two years at its original home in the Buckman neighborhood followed by two years at its current home in Lents Town Center, the Board of Directors for Portland’s nonprofit resident herd is preparing for its next move in June 2017.
“While the Lents neighborhood has been a great fit for us, and our landlords at the Portland Development Commission a great partner,” said b!X Frankonis, the board’s Secretary, “our current use permit terminates this coming June.”
The Belmont Goats initially arrived in Lents Town Center in October 2014 as part of an interim use initiative to activate vacant city-owned lots and generate interest in neighborhood redevelopment. Phase I of development in Lents Town Center recently got underway, and the herd’s current site is also intended for redevelopment once Phase I is completed.
To help interested neighborhoods understand what’s required to host the herd, the organization has released “Hosting the #belmontgoats: A Neighborhood How-To”, explaining the organization’s history and mission as well as presenting a detailed list of the herd’s “needs and wants”.
“Everything from requiring access to water to desiring access to the Internet to the proper type of property zoning is spelled out in the How-To,” explained board President Jess Kurtz. “After one site in Buckman and two in Lents, we’ve got a pretty good handle on what works for the herd, as well as for our host neighborhood.”
Interested neighborhoods are urged to read the How-To and submit initial proposals by the end of January 2017, so that The Belmont Goats can work toward having a relocation plan in place well before the June termination of its current permit in Lents.
“We’ve had two great neighborhoods play host to the goats,” said Jay Jimenez, the board’s Treasurer. “We look forward to finding out who will be the third.”
