Five common skin problems affecting men and how to prevent or tackle them

The notion that ‘men should not care about their appearance as they are brawny’ is a thing of the past. These day, several guys have attained the karmic realization that looking good and having a healthy skin is the key to enhancing their image.

A man with a healthy, glowing skin looks good naturally. However, skin of guys varies from that of women. Men’s skin is thicker, has more collagen, has a more advanced pilous system, and is oiler than women’s. It ages later than the fairer sex, but when the process begins, it’s abrupt. Featured below are five common skin problems affecting men as well as the ways to prevent or tackle those.

1. Shaving Rash/Razor Burn

If you have red, sore, irritated or sensitive skin over the areas you that you shave, then it is a tell-tale sign of shaving rash or razor burn. Depending on your skin type, this rash can be mild or severe. Often, shaving rashes are caused when your face isn’t prepared for a razor, or when you use it improperly. Bacteria that grows on your razor and around your ingrown hairs may also be responsible for shaving rash. It is advised to shave after you shower, which ensures your skin is warmed up. Also, use a foam, gel, or other lubricant before shaving and massage it properly on your skin. These products stimulate the beard hairs, making them stand up. While shaving, glide the razor down the grain of your beard in short, gentle strokes. If the burns or rashes persist, use an alcohol-free after-shave product containing Aloe Vera and/or Vitamin E to soothe your skin. Adhering to this prep and shaving routine should prevent breakouts of rashes just after a few times.

2. Rosacea

Rosacea or ‘ruddy face’ is a non-contagious skin inflammation that often affects the face. Often, men between ages of 30 to 50 suffer from rosacea, and it can worse as one gets older. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this inflammation, though prescription drugs can alleviate it. What you can certainly do is prevent the condition from worsening by avoiding harsh sunlight, alcohol, and certain foods like tomato, carrots, onions, eggplants, spinach, and radishes. Also, avoid using any skincare products for men, especially on your face that contain alcohol.

3. Acne

Acne, which continues into adulthood, can severely impair your confidence. According to a study conducted by Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, the median age of people with acne has increased by up to 23 percent, from 20.5 to around 26.5 years. Genetic, stress, poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle, and lack of sleep — the reasons for acne can be difficult to pinpoint. As an adult, you can alleviate acne by using products that cleanse and exfoliate your skin. Consider opting for acne treatment products that contain benzoyl peroxide and/or salicylic acid. The former kills bacteria while the latter unclogs your pores. Also, maintaining a facial cleansing routine helps prevent acne from reoccurring.

4. Dark Circles

Although a poor lifestyle and lack of sleep are what causes dark circles under your eyes, genetics, certain allergies, and a few foods may also be responsible for them. You can reduce the intensity of dark circles by doing a number of things — from using cold compresses over the the eyes to sleeping on higher pillows. Doing the latter prevents blood from pooling in the vessels under the eyes. You may go for under-eye creams containing caffeine, Arnica, green tea or grapeseed oil. Caffeine-based creams constrict blood vessels in the area improving the skin’s texture. Creams with Arnica reduce puffiness, while green tea or grapeseed oil enriched creams help strengthen capillary walls. Incorporating dark chocolate, salmon, and walnuts in your diet may also improve the flow of blood to the skin under the eye.

5. Wrinkles

Although staying wrinkle-free forever is not possible, you can certainly stall its spread with some care. Gently scrubbing your skin with an exfoliating face wash, applying a daily moisturiser, using sunscreen before stepping out in the sun, avoiding smoking, alcohol, and staying up late at nights will prevent wrinkles from showing up early. Also, eating lots of fruit and vegetables will help you combat wrinkles. These days, you can find several skincare products for men that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Enriched with retinol, you need to apply these creams at least twice in a week.

Men tend to be affected by these five common skin problems. Being a bit careful with your shaving routine, eating healthy, avoiding smoking and alcohol, sleeping early, and using skincare and acne treatment products will help you look young for a long time to come.
