I added extra layers of tape to the boxes piled in the center of my apartment, taking care to stack the smaller ones on top. I was wearing a tank top and shorts at 8 a.m., but I was already beginning to sweat in the end-of-June heat. My mask stuck to my face.
Earlier in the year, I had…

We met in the summer of 2019 in Mongolia, working on the same crew of a long-distance horse race. I was drawn to his quick wit and his confident hand upon the wild-eyed Mongol horses. A thin layer of dust only made him more handsome. Our chances for flirting came only when we happened to be in the same…
Here we are in 2021, still sheltering in place — but now, we have a new president, a vaccine in the world, and most of us are okay on toilet paper. Things are looking up, but it’ll likely be a while until most of us get our shot at the shot. So, we still have a lot of time to kill.
Weed, anyone?

“Do you want to come to bed?” I ask as I put my arms around my husband from behind the couch. Surely, he knows what this means. It’s 10 p.m. on a Tuesday and it’s been a week since we last went to bed together.
“In a bit,” he answers.
It’s now been a month. …

When the pandemic began, I hadn’t been in a proper relationship in years.
I’ve always been independent with no desire to be with just anyone to fill a void. After going freelance in my career in 2017, I decided to put all of my energy toward concentrating on my career. …

Our story started out so well: Drew and I met 20+ years ago while playing in the pit for musical theatre shows (him on bass, me on keyboards). I was dating someone at the time, but let’s just say I took note of him: He is tall, cute, and athletic.
When I became single and on the prowl again, I finagled…

I spent most of the month of June in Minneapolis in a blur. There were so many emotions — from the pandemic, the murder of George Floyd, the upcoming election, and traveling to care for my mom, who was facing health issues and was more fragile than I had ever seen her in my life. One thing that was clear…
The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Parents for Transparency and Safe Reopening, a group of concerned parents in Oakland, are pushing the school district to come up with a plan to reopen once Covid-19 case numbers (hopefully) come down again in the spring.
“As public health experts reach a clear consensus about the low risk of transmission of the COVID-19 virus within schools, Oakland parents have become frustrated and angry at the lack of urgency by educational leaders to get kids back to the classroom in a safe way,” they write in this piece on Medium.
The end of this hellacious — maddening, depressing, completely draining — year is almost here. Though it doesn’t mean the difficulties of the past twelve months will miraculously evaporate into thin air, 2021 does give us a fresh start and a chance to course-correct. And (fingers crossed) a successful vaccine rollout will allow us to deliver a Mariah Carey-inspired “[we] don’t know her” to Covid-19.
But this year, in all its taxing detritus, has shown us just how resilient denizens of the Bay Area are in the face of sheer pandemonium.
We erected parklets in lieu of indoor dining. Sex…

I kissed Mark at midnight on New Year’s Eve, when 2019 turned to 2020, and none of us knew what we were in for.
I had met this tall, muscular man — who was also somewhat quirky—through mutual friends the day before. Mark lived in Connecticut and was visiting my friends who lived in Redwood City. (I lived north in…
