Believe it or not, the best bait or the most reliable bait is not peanut butter as many would suggest, but is in fact dark chocolate with a minimum 70% cocoa content.
How to bait a rat trap
Rat traps come in all shapes and sizes, but most traditional traps have a flaw. They allow mice and young rats to cherry pick the bait right off the trigger. So how do we get round this?
A simple trick with any rodent control device is to superglue the bait to the trap, or in the case of chocolate, melt one edge and use it to stick the chocolate to the trigger/stage.
This one simple hack will double your chances of catching those pesky rats and mice first time.
The top rat baits we hear about again and again include:
- Peanut butter
- Sugar puffs
- Raisins and sultanas
- Chocolate in all it’s forms
- Nutella
- Cheese
- Sunflower seed centres made into a paste.
It’s important to clarify that these suggested baits come in many different brands and contain a variety of core ingredients.
As an example, you could try five different brands of peanut butter and discover that only one brand is effective. This principle is important to understand because it demonstarates the challenges faced by the seasoned expert and the amatuer alike.
