Whatā€™s Sipping?

Things take time but it does happenā€¦

In 2016, Nicole Tocci began transforming vintage Chanel buttons into necklaces because she saw a potential market.

But it took time for her to start from scratch with her side business. Tocci initially began offering the jewelry for sale at pop-up events and in her, Nikki Tans spray tan salon in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. The necklaces gradually attracted public attention over the course of the following four years.

Tocci launched One Vintage Button, a side hustle website, at the end of 2020. She earned $90,000 from it last year. According to documents seen by CNBC Make It, she had earned about $413,000 this year ā€” just over $41,000 each month ā€” as of last week.

The best part, Tocci says: She only dedicates three hours per workday to her lucrative side hustle.

Tocci claims sheā€™s always been good at organization and time and money management. She says that her first few years of running Nikki Tans taught her that rituals may also aid with productivity.

However, the side hustle, which amounts to around 20 hours of extra work per week, provided a new difficulty. It forced her to be more accepting of herself and others when things donā€™t go as planned, she adds.

Planning A good schedule is important:

ā€œI needed to build in scheduled times to rest and exercise, or both businesses would suffer,ā€ Tocci says. ā€œI also found that downtime was important because thatā€™s when I could do some brainstorming.ā€

Taking guilt-free time off has helped Tocci stay flexible and mentally focused, she says.

ā€œToday with social media, people are used to seeing results and high numbers when you reach success ā€” but they donā€™t really see what happens along the way,ā€ she says.

ā€œ[My side hustle] isnā€™t something that just happened overnight two years ago. It was a process, and it took confidence to give that idea a certain amount of time to see if it would work or not.ā€
