The Country Bean is a popular coffee brand based out of Kolkata that was recently founded back in 2016. And, like many other coffee brands, the Country Bean also eventually ventured into the space of hot chocolate. The Country Bean also has a couple of inspired flavourings: Peppermint Hot Chocolate and the Mocha Hot Chocolate.

This is a review of their Classic Hot Chocolate that I made by adding into hot milk.

Here’s how I rate this hot chocolate, see this article for the description of my rating criteria.

Aroma: No distinctive aroma while making or drinking the hot chocolate :(

Colour: A milk-chocolatey colour; it’s not the darkest or richest nor does it look mild.

Texture: The texture is good and quite normal for a hot chocolate — neither too thin, nor too thick. Feels like a full-bodied hot chocolate.

Chocolatey-ness: Not a very strong chocolate taste and my guess is that the taste is probably mild because of the added soy lecithin and vanillin. That said, I can taste the chocolate and it’s really.

Taste: 6/10. A “standard” hot chocolate that you wouldn’t remember. Nothing wrong with it, however nothing to go back to either. It’s not very sweet, and you can taste the chocolate, though it’s not very rich.

The Country Bean Hot Chocolate feels like a standard hot chocolate you might drink at a café and be happy with at that moment, but you would probably not actively seek it out again. That said, if you’re not the biggest fan of dark cup of chocolate you might actually enjoy this a bit more than the others I have rated higher. At about ₹50 per cup, this feels fairly priced compared to other hot chocolate mixes in its league.

Overall, you wouldn’t go wrong with this cup of hot chocolate, however you can definitely do better especially if you like your hot chocolate rich and dark.

A note about packaging

The hot chocolate mix comes in a simple paper back with a zip lock. It’s simple and practical.

However, the instructions at the back are definitely vague. The usage of a “heaped” tablespoon and “medium-size” cup leave room for ambiguity.

Fortunately though, a “heaped” tablespoon is close to 10 grams which is consistent with their serving size recommendation

Nutritional Information

Note: The nutrition facts above are for ~20gms, however in practice in 1 cup (250ml) of milk, I generally add ~25 gms of hot chocolate.

That gives the Calorie count in a cup to:117.5 (from just the hot chocolate mix).

Have you tried the Country Bean Hot Chocolate? Let me know what you think of it!
