The Chocolate Room — A Hot Chocolate Review

The Chocolate Room is a chain of bistros and cafés all over the country and while I haven’t gotten the chance to visit one of their stores yet (thanks Covid!) — I was really excited to find their Dark Hot Chocolate Mix on Amazon.

Here’s how I rate this hot chocolate, see this article for the description of my rating criteria.

Aroma: No strong aroma, I couldn’t smell much to be honest.

Colour: Really good colour, I was very excited by the dark brown and it looks extremely inviting. Quite the perfect rich, dark chocolate colour you would expect from a good cup of hot chocolate.

Texture: A bit on the thicker side, and the texture gives the feeling of a rich and smooth drink. Overall good texture.

Chocolatey-ness: To be honest, I don’t taste the cacao or the chocolate much. There’s some bitterness, or the absence of sugar rather — but even then the taste of chocolate doesn’t come through. It makes me wonder that they haven’t used the highest quality cocoa beans/chocolate. The chocolate is also perhaps softened by the addition of both soy lecithin and vanillin, another indication of poor quality chocolate being used.

Taste: 3.5/10. This hot chocolate mix could definitely do with more sugar. The lack of good chocolate used in the mix ensured I was left with an overall unsatisfactory cup of hot chocolate. Overall below average: I was switching between a 3.5/10 and a 4/10. I’ll stick with the 3.5/10.

There are some hot chocolates that come that you’re extremely excited about. The Chocolate Room Dark Hot Chocolate was one of them. It also had a lot going for it to begin with — an extremely enticing colour and texture — but in the end my taste buds were left searching for more. A lot more. The drink is reasonably priced at ₹27.92 per cup, but even then I think you might be able to do better by going for some of the run-of-the mill hot chocolates from Cadbury or Hersheys (both in terms of price and taste).

An unfortunately disappointing experience.

A note about packaging

The Chocolate Room Dark Hot Chocolate comes in a cylindrical container with the hot chocolate contained within a sealed plastic pouch. That said, I am not sure if the packaging quality is in general bad or if I just got plain unlucky. I received this hot chocolate with the top lid of the container damaged and the plastic packet inside seem to have exploded open with the hot chocolate mix all over. The lid also sits somewhat loosely on top ensuring enough moisture and other elements in the air are able to enter the box without a fuss.

Damaged Lid

That said, the instructions on the container are very clear and this is one of the very few hot chocolate mixes that reduces ambiguity by specifying both the number of tablespoons and grams — that correctly add up!

2tbsp (20g) of mix in one cup of hot milk
1 tbsp = 10g
