I remember hearing someone say “You Are The Sum Of The 5 People Closest To You” and thinking to myself how absolutely absurd that sounded. At the time, I definitely lacked self-awareness so I don’t think I would have really been able to comprehend how true that statement was, but after growing up and learning more about myself and my state-of-mind, I now see the truth behind that statement.
After being in many scenarios where I look around and realize that I am in a bad position with the same 2–5 people each time, I realized that their is more than just truth in that quote, but it is the most honest truth I have ever been forced to realize.
I have lost a lot of friends in my life, and have had to cut out even more because they are simply not on the same path as me.
After adjusting the 5 people closest to me to be those who are inspiring, role models, and mentors that have accomplished or are accomplishing things that at one time were just dreams to them, I realized not only do those 5 people massively matter to your overall state-of-mind, but they also matter most to your future.
When the environment that you are in is being filled with toxic thoughts and actions, you will be constantly fighting to see the good in the world or in any situation.
No matter how strong you think you are we are vulnerable to toxic environments, and overtime you will take the same mindset that the toxic people in that environment have. Its inevitable.
No one tells you that you have to remove the toxic people from your life entirely - they may be your life-long friend, or maybe family, or just someone who has been with you through thick-and-thin. You just have to make sure the people you spend the most time with are going in the same direction you want to go.
Limit your time with toxic people and maximize the energy spent with positive influences.
