The winning design by Michael Maltzan Architecture for the international St. Petersburg Pier contest has created a stunning, sustainable structure linking the community with its proximal water environment. The design titled “Lens” reflects on the relationship between the pier and the underlying bay beyond. Aspects of the circular looping design include multilevel vantage points of the bay as well as paths for walkers, bikers, and tram riders. The massive layout includes an open air amphitheater and water amusement park providing entertainment for visitors of all ages.

Stretching all the way into downtown St. Petersburg, the beginning and ending points of the pier give the community more opportunity to experience the bay and pier attractions. Recycled structural pieces from the previous existing pier create artificial reefs and eco-systems encouraging the thriving marine life. The modern design includes rainwater collection systems and solar power panel installments. Citizens of St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay at large will likely look forward to new symbol of a revitalized downtown. [via inhabitat]
