Hello Dance Fam!!! What’s good? How is life treating you? As you can tell, I’m super pumped to be writing you this post!!! So, let’s get right to it…
A little while back, (October 15th, 2017), I got a chance to participate in a talent competition that took place over at Two Rivers Mall. Now, mind you this was going to be my first performance for the year, so to say I was nervous would be the understatement of the century. I was absolutely terrified guys. I don’t know what it is about not performing for a while that just gets to your head.
The show started at around 2:30 pm with both group and solo performances taking the stage. By this time, I had already gotten my hair, makeup, and styling was done by my fabulous friend Njoki who had tagged along for moral support as she always does for these kinds of things. (Thanks girl, much love).
Okay back to the show and what was going on. There were performances from people of all age groups and the acts included, singing, dancing, and playing of instruments. There was plenty of talent to appreciate. Before I knew it, it was my turn to perform. I could feel my heart thumping ever so loudly as though it wanted to jump out of my chest. Even now as I type this, it’s happening again! I walked up the stage and waited for the Dj to cue my music. I could tell the audience was trying to figure out what type of performance I had in store for them as I was dressed in ripped jeans and a tee while most other acts had wonderfully detailed Diwali-appropriate costumes.
But then the music started and nothing else mattered. I was transported to my ‘zone.’ The place I always go to whenever I dance. A place of confidence! A place of pure & utter joy! I danced! I danced till the music was no more. All the while amid cheers and screams from the audience that reassured me I should keep going. And I did. Until the song was over. And my heart was still thumping. But this time from the elation of, “I did it!” I came, I danced and I killed it!
Right after my performance, I was a little dizzy. The adrenaline was wearing off and I was super thirsty. I found myself a seat and took a moment to relax and catch my breath all the while sipping some water.
After that I pretty much enjoyed myself. There were a few more acts that were set to perform as well as a fashion show, all of which were fantastic!
Later in the evening came to the award ceremony and alas, my name was called for first place! I couldn’t believe it. I got up on the stage, received my prize money (it was a decent amount) and that was that!
By this time, it was around 7 pm and so the festival was winding to a close. There was a beautiful water display over by the waterfront and a mind-blowing display of fireworks!
It was a night to remember!
And as I leave you, for now, I just want you to remember, do the things that scare you. You never know, you might surprise yourself and accomplish great things. Just have a little faith in yourself.
I will now leave you with a clip of my winning performance. Do check it out and let me know what you think.
And as always,
Love & Light!
‘Till I write you again!
