Tokyo is a city rich with culture, and in no place is the culture more concentrated than in the food they serve. There are so many kinds of delicious food just within Tokyo that it would be difficult to discuss them all in one sitting, but it should be said that they are all worth trying. In order to condense things down a little bit, here is a quick looks into some of Tokyo’s most classic foods.

  1. Sushi

You really can’t talk about Japan without talking about sushi. It may seem like a basic topic, everyone knows what sushi is, right? Sure, most people of the western world are familiar with the wheel- shaped sushi covered in rice with cucumber and avocado in the middle, but this is a bit of a stretch from real Japanese sushi. Sushi in Japan comes in all shapes and sizes, but the most common features a bed of steamed rice with a piece a raw fish placed on top, and secured by a strip of seaweed. Being surrounded by ocean, you’re sure to taste some of the freshest sushi of your life. Don’t miss out.

2. Soba

When you think of Tokyo, you probably think of ramen noodles. While ramen is plentiful in Tokyo, so are soba noodles, which are made from buckwheat. They tend to be much thicker than ramen. They have a rich, chewy texture, and are usually served in some kind of soup. They are great for slurping, and in Japan, it is perfectly acceptable to do so.

3. Dango

Dango is a popular Japanese dessert made from sweet rice dumplings. They are usually served on a skewer with three dumplings stacked on top of each other to resemble a snowman. The dumplings are typically grilled, but can also be cooked on a fire like marshmallows. Dango is usually served with some kind of sweet sauce on top.
