Your business is everywhere online

Why I end up using only Twitter for my business at the end of the day

During my early stint in my online fashion retail business, I always have this kind of mentality that I NEED to be everywhere. Yup, even at the place that I least expect to because you’ll never know you’ll get customers at the odd places.

If you’re into this Law of Attraction thingy, you might think there is a possibility you make a sale in odd places because you manifest it to happen that way.

Well, that’s what I’d like to think but sadly, it never happened to me. Sure, I make new friends in those odd places but new sales? Zero. Ziltch. Nada.

Thank goodness that I’ve become wiser for my second business and I’m not going to repeat the same mistakes that I did in my first business (in case you’re wondering, I decided to forgo the business last year only because I’ve lost passion in it and I could no longer see myself doing it for the rest of my life).

I’ve said I’ve become wiser but I still need to be everywhere. However, I’ve narrowed down my focus to these places that I think I will get even just a tiny results thanks to my action: Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn.

At the end of the day, I’m sticking myself with Twitter and decided to ditch Google+ and LinkedIn. There goes my wonderful idea of being everywhere.

How being everywhere looks ideally

Whether you’re just newbies in business or have more experiences in business than everyone else, you just felt like being everywhere these days is easy.

Really? Yes, really. We have technology in our disposal. Shouldn’t it be easy to be everywhere where this is so unlikely possible to do back in the old days?

I have to agree on this statement because you can pretty much automate your presence especially on social media. All you need to know is what is the best time and day to post on these social media channels and you’re good to go.

Ideally, this is how your strategy for being everywhere looks like:

  1. You sign up with every social media channel out there, whether your customers are there or not
  2. Thanks to RSS Feed, your social media channels are automatically updated when your blog post goes live
  3. Use HootSuite to monitor your whole social media channels in one dashboard.

That is so simple, isn’t it?

Why this kind of be everywhere strategy is tiring for you

If your idea of being everywhere is being on every social media channels that exist on this planet, chances are you’re not doing anything good for your business.

Here’s why this kind of strategy won’t do any justice to your business:

It’s not easy to manage social media channels effectively

Even if you do have the capital to hire someone to manage your social media presence, it’s still hard to manage your social media channels, practically-wise.

Regardless of what social media channels you are using, you have to be active on those channels most of the time. Even if with automation, your customers can easily spot you’re not even there.

It’s a different story if you basically live in a different timezone but other than that, you have to show to people that you’re physically active on that said social media channels.

Unfortunately, social media automation can never replicate that no matter what.

Not every social media channel brings the results you desire

Well, different social media channels have different way of communicating with your target audience and even the same people would have different behavior on different social media channels.

This is what I have noticed during my first business. I happened to know this girl who was following me on Twitter. Upon checking her Twitter profile, I noticed that she also have Facebook account so I decided to inform her to like my Facebook page.

Logically speaking, she wouldn’t care to follow me more than one place (maybe in her mind, following me on Twitter is enough). However, if she noticed that I only made Facebook-only contents, then she’ll be more likely to like my Facebook fanpage even though she already followed me on Twitter.

Can you guess it? When I told her the benefit of what she’ll get when she likes my Facebook fanpage, she just simply said okay and never bother to do it.

Maybe she’s using auto-follow software to follow me on Twitter but in a nutshell, you can’t just replicate the same message you used on Twitter to use it on Facebook.

I didn’t replicate any of the message I sent to her on Facebook but she still didn’t like my Facebook fanpage. I wonder what will happened if I blast her with the same message I used on Twitter to her Facebook account? She might be pissed or just mark me as spam.

What being everywhere SHOULD looks like

For obvious reason, I am NOT going to give up the idea of being everywhere despite of having massive failures in my previous attempts.

If you really are serious about being everywhere, then there’s only one way to do it: convert your blog post into different formats. Yup, you have to convert those blog posts into podcast, video and slide presentations. That is why content repurposing is hot right now and will not go away in the near future.

That sounds like a lot of work but it works much better than being on every social media channels exist on this planet.

This is the reason why I only use Twitter at the end of the day

Even though I only picked three instead of many social media channels out there, Twitter happens to be the only thing I use for my business so I’m free to ditch the rest.

The reason is because it brings me result with some people discovered me and favorited my tweets. My followers come and go because they expect me to follow them just because they have followed me but it does bring the traffic back to my website.

That’s the end goal all of us should be focusing on. We want them go to our website and buy our stuffs. Not to mention, I also like Twitter because it’s easier for me to get the latest news and useful knowledge on Twitter. These contents that I discovered are apparently retweeted by someone else.

What you should be doing now

If you’re serious about being everywhere, then you really have to repurpose your contents into different formats. Sure, it seems like a lot of work but it works much better than being on every social media channels.

What about your social media channels then? Just stick with what works in your business and it’s also something that you enjoy using it. Ditch the rest that don’t work.

When you do this, not only you have peace of mind but you will also get better result for your marketing too. Now, that’s more favorable.
