Stop using massacres to fuel your own political gain

My heart broke today when I heard the news. I am disgusted and angry that a man would take the lives of so many people. I am sure most of you already know what happened, but for those that have not heard.

In the wee hours of June 12, 2016, a lone American-born gunman named Omar Mateen, who had recently sworn allegiance to the Islamic State, walked into a gay bar in Orlando, Florida and slaughtered 50 people in deadliest terrorist attack on US soil since 9/11.

There are no words to say in the face of a tragedy like this. No words anyone can say really.

And yet you want to know how the politicians reacted? After sending token statements expressing sorrow for the victims before turning back to their politics just minutes later.

It is only a few hours after the tragedy, and you see posts like

  • Obama pushes a statement criticizing guns.
  • Hillary saying the same thing.

Trump attacks Obama for not saying Radical Islam and saying the US is not safe with Hillary as president.

  • And what is possibly the most inappropriate tweet that I have ever seen in my entire life.
Seriously?

I would like to take a moment to let that last one sink in.

I fear for America because the road will only get uglier from here.

  • The left will cry that loose gun control is what caused this tragedy.
  • The right will shout that the left is full of lunatics and that it was clearly radical Islam and that we need to ban all Muslims from entering the US.
  • The left will unleash another flurry of insults before pointing out that Omar Mateen was born and raised in the US.
  • The right will point their fingers in disgust and say that his father was a Taliban supporter and never should have been allowed to immigrate in the first place.
  • And so on.

Oh how I wish I could say that only one side was guilty of this, but I cannot, and pointing fingers for which side is more of a bigot is worse than useless.

This is just the beginning, where people ignore the travesty of what happened and immediately start fighting for their own agenda and shouting onto deaf ears.

War is coming. 148 days until November 8.
