With transfer rumours flying around like crazy, it’s often difficult to keep up with all the excitement that the January window brings us. So why not take a little detour into the shallow waters of the rumour mill and talk about a player who deserves to be in ‘the mill’, but quite frankly isn’t called upon as much as we would like. We’re talking about the newly crowned Russian tsar of football: Quincy Promes.

You heard it right: the Dutchman recently won the award for best player in Russia (2017)! With his cool dribbling and very high efficiency, he’s prolific on the pitch. Combined with his off pitch, streetstyle appearance, he’s easily one of the most significant characters in Russian football today. But first, let’s take a step back, back to the Netherlands, Quincy’s country of origin. Promes was recruited bij Ajax at a very young age. Unfortunately he didn’t make the cut and moved to HFC Haarlem, before eventually ending up at FC Twente. Prior to moving to Russia, Promes only experienced one full season in the Dutch topflight, scoring eleven goals in 31 matches. Ever since moving to Russia, Promes has ‘kept his promise’ (no pun intended), by playing extremely consistent. Scoring thirteen goals in his first season, eighteen in his second and twelve in his third, he’s proven to have what it takes. The question that rises though, is why no major European club hasn’t picked him up yet?

Let’s face it, being a big league team you want your wingers to deliver. Promes has proven to do just that. If we look at this year’s statistics, Promes has already scored ten goals in seventeen league matches (thus missing three games). He’s given six assists and created eleven big chances. Furthermore, his pass accuracy is 77 percent.

In comparison, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard has scored six goals in eighteen matches (missing four). Giving two assists and creating four big chances. His passing accuracy is 80 percent. Now, Hazard might not have his best season, but still. Spartak’s and Chelsea’s league position is pretty similar, so that takes away the wave of a team’s success being a factor. Alright, I hear you. The premier league is probably a more challenging league than the Russian, so let’s take a look at another, more similar league.

According to the UEFA rankings, the French league holds an almost similar number of points as the Russian league (52.415 and 50.182 respectively). With that, both countries have four teams still in the European competitions (Spartak Moscow is in there, yes). So, I’d say that both competitions are pretty similar in terms of output. How does Promes compare to one of Ligue 1’s big fishes? How does he do against Neymar?

Neymar has played fourteen league games in which he scored eleven times. Giving nine assists and creating 21 big chances. His passing accuracy is 75 percent. Statwise, Neymar is doing better. Not by miles, but he is doing better. The thing is, however, that Neymar is playing for Paris Saint Germain. PSG is on fire! So therefore it’s probably easier for Neymar to put up big numbers.

How does Promes do compared to these giants?

With a current market value of 22 million euros, Promes could be considered as an absolute steal! In the midst of all the crazy transfer fees being paid, Promes is a true ‘hidden gem’. If you happen to be a scout of a major European football club, you have to look in to this guy. If you are not, look up some clips of the man on Youtube. Should Quincy get the transfer he so much deserves, I’m sure he will keep his Promes again!
