There is no shortage of great RPG titles out there for gamers to check out if they are fans of storytelling in the medium. Disco Elysium is a game that stands out in the genre by defying convention.

Developed by ZA/UM and Released in 2021, Disco: Elysium The Final Cut includes all the content of the original game along with several improvements, including full voice acting for every character in the game.

Set in the fictional city of Revachol, you are put into the shoes of a detective suffering from amnesia, tasked with solving a murder mystery that threatens to unravel the delicate balance of power in the city.

The gameplay consists of you walking around and interacting with your environment, including starting conversations with NPCs. The most notable aspect of the game is its emphasis on dialogue and player choice.

Every conversation is an opportunity to shape the story, with your decisions influencing not only the outcome of the investigation but also the protagonist’s state of mind and beliefs.

The game does not feature the RPG mechanics that you’d expect like combat and skill trees. Instead, Disco Elysium prioritizes the protagonist’s internal struggle, allowing you to shape his personality through choices.

As you make these choices, you will have the opportunity to internalize certain beliefs, granting you bonuses that may come in useful when having to pass a check later in the game.

You can embrace nihilism or idealism or grapple with addiction and trauma. It’s entirely up to you, and every decision can lead to multiple branching paths in the game.

The writing in Disco Elysium is dripping with wit, satire, and existential despair. You will frequently hear philosophical musings on the nature of reality to darkly humorous anecdotes about life in Revachol.

Thanks to the game’s script, the world of Disco Elysium feels like it is filled with richly realized characters. Even minor characters have prominent personalities that make them feel alive.

Disco Elysium gameplay

One of the game’s most engaging aspects is its atmosphere which is shaped by its art style and soundtrack. If you are a fan of noir detective stories then this is the game for you.

In conclusion, Disco Elysium serves as a shining example of the power of video games as a medium for storytelling. In our opinion, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is not to be missed.

Final Score: 4.5/5
