Very timely piece. I would add that there’s also a huge benefit to becoming familiar with the native seeds and nuts of our respective regions. Here in California, for example, there’s a reawakening to the traditional Native American culinary uses of acorns, chia, and hundreds of other native plant products. Even more important than opening us up to new flavors and sources of sustainable nutrition, native plants can bring us into deeper relationship with our natural environment and deeper awareness of its increasing fragility and need for global stewardship.
