How To Properly Heat Your Hedgehog’s Cage

As cute and cuddly as hedgehogs are, they are also very delicate creatures. Unlike European Hedgehogs that goes into hibernation, African Pigmy hedgehogs are not equipped to withstand cooler temperatures. This is why it is important to make sure that their cages are heated properly at all times.

Ceramic Heat Emitters for Hedgehog Cages

The best way to heat your hedgehog’s cage is by using a ceramic heat emitter (CHE). This is a device that gives off heat without light, making it ideal for nighttime use.

How to set up a Ceramic Heat Emitter

Here are a few tips on how to properly use a ceramic heat emitter to keep your hedgehog warm and comfortable:

  1. First, make sure that the ceramic heat emitter is the right size for the cage. It should be big enough to provide adequate coverage.
  2. Next, place the ceramic heat emitter on top of the cage and plug it into an outlet. If possible, position it so that it’s pointing downwards towards the floor of the cage. This will help to create a more even distribution of heat. Ensure that your hedgehog can’t come into direct contact with it as they get extremely hot!
  3. Finally, keep an eye on the temperature inside the cage. The ideal temperature for a hedgehog’s cage is between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a thermometer to check the temperature regularly and make adjustments as necessary.

Heating Pads for Hedgehog’s Cage

Electric Heating Pad

An additional source of heat can be an electric heating pad like this one. This is helpful if you live in a climate where your floors get really cold! I like to put this pad underneath fleece blankets so the hedgehog will not get burned if the pad gets too hot.

Microwaveable Heating Pad

The microwaveable Snuggle Safe Disks are also great to put in your hedgehog’s home or igloo. And they are fantastic for traveling, as they keep their heat for a good 8 hours. Keep in mind these are not enough of a heat source on their own — you will still need ceramic heat emitters for your hedgehog’s cage!

By following these simple tips, you can easily create a warm and comfortable environment for your hedgehog. Ceramic heat emitters are an excellent way to provide gentle, consistent heat, without light. Just be sure to monitor the temperature carefully and make adjustments as needed. Your hedgehog will thank you for it!
