iBeacon’s Holiday Results
Ijaz Anwar talks about iBeacon’s results
iBeacon was recently tested by retailers over the holiday system for its effectiveness. In case you have never heard of it, iBeacon is a technology system that sends alerts to your smartphone based on your location when you are shopping. Retailers like Kenneth Cole and Timberland tested the product over the last six months.
The application simply sends you alerts based on where you are in a store or a mall. If you are walking near a Timberland your smartphone may begin buzzing to tell you what shopping deals you could get if you walked in.
With this revolutionary way to reach customers many were polled afterward to decide if iBeacon could be the next big thing in shopping. The results are according to Swirl Networks, Inc.
- 67 percent had received in-store alerts related to shopping in the last six months
- From that 67 percent, 81 percent opened the alert and 79 percent said they bought something at least once using that alert
Testing the value of the product was also important to iBeacon. They wanted to know why people would chose to ignore an alert. Swirl Networks, Inc. found…
- Of those who ignored alerts 41 percent stated it was not relevant to their location, 37 percent said the change in value was not substantial enough, and 16 percent found the alerts annoying
- 77 percent of all consumers said that if the value was good enough they would feel comfortable sharing their location, a requirement for iBeacon to send alerts
- When trusting their smartphone data to others 65 percent said they would feel comfortable with their favorite retailer, 45 percent would trust a shopping app, 42 percent trusted Google and 37 percent trusted Facebook
