#WeekendRecommend — April 29th
Here’s my five favourite things of the week in no particular order!
Hilary Mantel is the author of two of my favourite novels of all time: Wolf Hall and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies which follow the rise of Thomas Cromwell in the court of King Henry VIII. This insight into her writing process — the work, the frustration, the serendipity, the full lack of knowing what she’s even making in the moment — is extremely encouraging to me because I often self-sabotage what I’m writing by judging it too closely during the moment, rather than letting it speak for itself later.
B) The Comeback Kid — John Mulaney [Stand Up Comedy Special]
The whole special is worth checking out (it’s up on Netflix), but the stand out moment which made me really laugh hard is his last ten or fifteen minutes when he tells the story of how he met Bill Clinton when he was a kid. Really well told and super funny. To be clear, the clip I’m posting with this is NOT the Bill Clinton story, but it’s a little taste of his style which is all I could find on youtube from The Comeback Kid.
Bonus: He’s not super offensive. Some swearing but very reasonable.
Motivation is bullshit. It is shallow and short sighted. It is unreliable. Discipline is permanent. The ability to make yourself do things you don’t want to do will shape your life more than a minute’s motivation.
I just enjoyed the sentiment of this article. It was a kick in the butt I needed when I read it and thought I would share it. Doesn’t have to relate to the gym necessarily as much as finding the balance between motivation and discipline in all aspects of life.
I’m really not that great at discipline. I have often caught myself feeling that “I want to want to do such and such,” rather than accepting that “I may not want to do that but in order to achieve the things I want I need to.” This expressed that fight inside me very well.
D) The Walking Dead — Season 6 Finale [NO SPOILERS]
OH. FREAKING. MAN. We finally meet Negan and he is sooooo juicy as a villain. Cannot wait to see how this all develops next season. That is all.
E) “Hold Up”— Beyoncé
Lemonade dropped this week and people be freaking out. I’m not fully sure how I feel about the whole album yet, and I haven’t seen the HBO Special that was released with the album. But one track jumped out at me immediately. Here’s why I love “Hold Up” specifically: I am a HUGE fan of upbeat songs with devastating lyrics — The Everly Brothers’ “Bye Bye Love”, Paul Simon’s “The Boy in the Bubble”, etc. — and Beyoncé nails it here. Super poppy and bouncy production contrasts with some seriously angry and desperate lyrics. Also she’s got a really nice semi-growl going on vocally in some parts — while still keeping it light. Only available on Tidal. I forget how I got to listen to it since I’m not a subscriber ;) but it’s worth hunting down.
EDIT: Apparently this is available for purchase on iTunes now. Which is definitely where I got it…
